A year of reading the world
Would you like to travel the world in one year? Ann Morgan, an Australian writer, did this from her couch - she discovered different cultures by reading a book from every single one of the 195 UN-recognized countries.
She read 196 books in total and came up with the names by asking people around the world in her blog A Year of Reading the World created in the beginning of 2012 especially for this project. Ann said: "The response was amazing. Before I knew it, people all over the planet were getting in touch with ideas and offers of help. Some posted me books from their home countries. Others did hours of research on my behalf." Ann had to dedicate a lot of her time to finish her "travels" in one year: according to her calculations you need to read approximately one book every 2 days. And the books are not very tiny, as you can see!
In her article for the BBC, she mentioned that the only problem she faced was that in some parts of the world not all of the books are being translated in English and there are even places where stories are not written down.
Looking at Ann, we come to the conclusion that even when you don't have the money you always have the opportunity to travel and discover new cultures by reading while sitting on the couch.
