A new crowdfunding platform for journalists

Contributoria aims to create crowdfunding community for high quality journalists. A new site funded by Guardian Media Group, is an attempt to build an open community that allows journalists to collaborate on and crowdfund high quality journalism.

There have been a number of attempts to bring crowdfunding to journalism over the past several years, including a venture called Spot us or NewAssignment and some high profile journalism projects that have launched on Kickstarter. But while some or all of these have been successful at funding journalism or individual journalists, none have created a vibrant community for writers to collaborate in addition to helping them get paid. This is what they are trying to build with Contributoria.

While the site is geared towards journalists and writers, membership in the community is open to anyone – its free while the site is in beta, although a fee will be involved at some point. Writers submit their proposals and the fee they would like to receive, and then they seek support in much the same way a Kickstarter project does. Although, there are no rewards for different levels of support the way there are with some platforms.

In addition to the funds contributed by members, potential sources of revenue include allowing advertisers or media companies to sponsor a piece of journalism, or to contribute money towards the pool of financing – as well as potential licensing feels for finished pieces. The one thing Contributoria plants to avoid is advertising, because that would make the site less appealing for members.

Emphasis on community and collaboration is one of the things that makes Contributoria different from other attempts at crowdfunding  journalism. Whether Contributoria can become a viable alternative for journalists, remains to be seen.
